housekeepers battle germs and bacteria

How Housekeepers Battle Germs and Bacteria

Published on January 12, 2024

In the daily hustle of life, the significance of cleanliness cannot be exaggerated. Now, more than ever, the global community is acutely aware of the invisible threats that surround us in the form of germs and bacteria. Enter the unsung heroes of hygiene – housekeepers. Behind every spotless hotel room, gleaming office space, or welcoming home is a dedicated army of professionals armed with science and expertise. So how do housekeepers battle germs and bacteria?

The Art of Disinfection:

Housekeepers are not just armed with mops and brooms. They wield an arsenal of disinfectants carefully crafted to battle germs and bacteria. One of the key players in this battle is bleach, a potent disinfectant that destroys a wide range of bacteria and viruses. Sodium hypochlorite, the active ingredient in bleach, attacks the molecular structure of microbes, leaving them harmless. Housekeepers strategically use this weapon, diluting it to specific concentrations to ensure both efficiency and safety.

The Power of Steam:

In the war against germs, steam emerges as a formidable ally. Housekeepers use the sanitizing power of steam to eliminate bacteria on various surfaces. The high temperature of steam is lethal to many microorganisms, making it an eco-friendly and effective method. From carpets to kitchen surfaces, the controlled release of steam not only cleans but sterilizes, leaving no room for germs to live.

Microfiber Cloths:

The choice of cleaning tools is a crucial aspect of the housekeeper’s strategy. Enter microfiber – a seemingly humble fabric with extraordinary cleaning capabilities. Microfiber cloths and mop heads are designed to capture and trap microscopic particles, including bacteria. Unlike traditional cleaning materials, microfiber doesn’t merely spread germs around, it removes them from surfaces, contributing to a healthier and cleaner environment.

UV-C Light:

In the quest for cleanliness, housekeepers use cutting-edge technology, and UV-C light is a prime example. Ultraviolet-C light has germicidal properties, effectively disrupting the DNA of bacteria and viruses. Housekeepers use UV-C light devices to sanitize high-touch surfaces in rooms and common areas. This method adds an extra layer of defence, especially in spaces where traditional cleaning may have limitations.

The Chemistry of Cleaners:

Behind the scenes, housekeepers are also amateur chemists, understanding the science of cleaning agents. Enzymatic cleaners, for instance, use specific enzymes to break down organic matter, such as stains and spills, at a molecular level. This not only cleans the visible mess but also eliminates the hidden microbial threats. By understanding the chemical interactions involved, housekeepers can select the most effective cleaners for different surfaces and situations.

Training and Expertise:

Housekeepers undergo rigorous training to understand how to maintain a hygienic environment. From the proper use of cleaning agents to mastering the art of cross-contamination prevention, their expertise ensures that every swipe of a cloth is a strategic move in the battle against germs.

High-Touch Point Focus:

In the war against germs, housekeepers strategically focus on high-touch points – the surfaces most prone to contamination. They pay particular attention to doorknobs, light switches and elevator buttons. By prioritizing these areas, housekeepers target the places where germs are most likely to spread, creating a safer environment for everyone.

Armed with a deep understanding of disinfectants, cutting-edge technology, and the chemistry of cleaning agents, housekeepers transform spaces into sanctuaries of health. As we navigate a world where hygiene is paramount, let’s not forget to appreciate the unsung heroes who, through their expertise and dedication, continue to battle germs and bacteria, ensuring that cleanliness truly becomes a science.

things to prepare for your housekeeper’s arrival

Things to Prepare for Your Housekeeper’s Arrival

Published on November 10, 2023

Hiring a housekeeper for the first time might leave you wondering how to prepare for their visit. Might that be a full time or a part time housekeeper, there are a few things you want to consider. Here are a few things to prepare for your housekeeper’s arrival.

Secure Your Belongings

One of the primary considerations before your housekeeper’s visit is securing your personal belongings. Take a few moments to stow away items such as jewellery, books, and important documents. Conduct a thorough check in key areas like your bedside table, dining room, bathrooms, and walk-in wardrobes. Not only does this step make it easier for the housekeeper to clean, but it also safeguards your valuables from accidental damage. By organizing and putting away items, you create a clutter-free environment that facilitates a more effective cleaning session.

Check Your Security System

If you won’t be at home when your housekeeper arrives, it’s crucial to provide them with the necessary access tools. Offer a spare key and any important information about your home’s alarm system. This prevents unnecessary alarms from sounding when the housekeeper enters, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted cleaning process. Open communication about access details helps build trust between you and your housekeeper, fostering a positive working relationship.

Communicate any Special Requests

Every home has its unique preferences, and it’s essential to communicate yours to your housekeeper. Whether it’s a specific brand of cleaning chemicals, a preference for a particular toilet paper folding style, or a request for daily bedsheet changes, make these preferences clear before their arrival. Establishing open lines of communication ensures that your housekeeper understands and can accommodate your preferences, leading to a cleaning routine that aligns with your expectations.

Pet Preparation

For households with pets, effective communication is key to a harmonious cleaning experience. Inform your housekeeper about your pets’ presence and any specific instructions related to them. This may include guidelines on keeping certain doors closed, being cautious about allergies, or specifying whether your pet should be let outside during the cleaning process. By providing this information upfront, you contribute to a safe and comfortable environment for both your pets and the housekeeper.

Laundry Guidelines

Clearly outlining your laundry preferences is essential for a housekeeper to deliver a service that aligns with your expectations. Communicate specific instructions for washing certain types of clothing and identify any items that require special care. This ensures that your clothes are handled according to your preferences, preventing any misunderstandings and contributing to a more efficient cleaning process.

Set Realistic Expectations

Understanding the time required for a thorough cleaning is crucial for setting realistic expectations. If certain areas of your home require extra attention, discuss these with your housekeeper beforehand. This proactive communication allows for proper time allocation, ensuring a comprehensive cleaning without feeling rushed. Openly communicating your expectations helps foster a collaborative and transparent relationship, benefiting both you and your housekeeper.

Preparing for your housekeeper’s arrival involves a combination of organisation, communication, and setting clear expectations. By taking these essential steps, you contribute to a positive working relationship, ensuring that your housekeeper can provide a cleaning service tailored to your unique needs and preferences.

Elevate Your Party With a Butler

Elevate Your Party With a Butler for a Day

Published on October 18, 2023

Do you have a wedding, anniversary, birthday or engagement party planned and have no idea how to elevate it? Hiring a butler for a day can add a touch of elegance and luxury to your event, making it a memorable and enjoyable experience for you and your guests. The butler can help save time and relieve some of the stress that comes with hosting an event. Here are some steps to help you elevate your party with a butler for a day.

Define Your Needs

Clearly outline what you expect from the butler for the day. Discuss your requirements with Polo and Tweed to ensure we can meet your expectations. Consider factors like the number of guests, the type of event (e.g., formal dinner, cocktail party, casual gathering), and any specific tasks or services you want the butler to perform. Butlers can assist with serving food and beverages, so make sure to discuss your preferences and dietary restrictions. The butler can work closely with the chef to create a seamless service and make your party memorable.

Coordinate with the Butler

Prior to the event, communicate with the butler or butlers who will be serving at your event. Provide them with a detailed timeline of the event, including when they should arrive, the schedule of activities, and any special instructions. Butlers can work in a calm manner and troubleshoot any planned or unplanned surprises. Butlers know when to be discreet and blend in the background so the focus is on the host and the guests.

Dress Code and Appearance

Discuss the dress code and appearance of the butler. You may want them to wear traditional butler attire or something more casual, depending on the theme and formality of your event. It’s important to choose how you wish them to look so they don’t outshine the host and the guests.

Prepare the Space

The butler will ensure that your event space is clean, organized, and set up according to your preferences. This includes arranging seating, table settings, and any decorations. They may work closely with event planners and coordinators to ensure that the event runs smoothly, following the schedule and handling any unexpected issues discreetly. Liaise with delivery companies making sure that everything will be delivered safely and on time.

Welcome Guests

When the guests arrive, introduce them to your butler and outline their role for the day. Make sure your guests know they can rely on the butler for assistance with drinks, food, and other services. The butler is on hand to assist guests with any special requests or needs they may have, such as dietary restrictions, allergies, or mobility issues.

Butler Services

During the party, the butler can provide various services, such as:

  • They will greet the guests and show them to their seat
  • They will serve food and drinks to guests, offering an attentive and personalized dining experience. This may include passing hors d’oeuvres, pouring wine, or serving plated meals. In events with a bar service, butlers may serve as bartenders, mixing and serving drinks to guests while maintaining a clean and organized bar area.
  • They may assist guests with checking their coats, bags, or personal belongings and ensure that these items are securely stored.
  • They pay attention to guest comfort, adjusting lighting, temperature, and music levels as needed to create the desired ambience.
  • Tending to any special requests or needs of your guests
  • Help with setting up and clearing tables
  • Refilling drinks and replenishing food

Find the Right Butlers for Your Event

By following these steps and working closely with Polo & Tweed, you can elevate your party with a butler and create a more enjoyable and memorable experience for you and your guests. nanny housekeeper

Should you Hire a Housekeeper or a Nanny?

Published on September 13, 2023

Housekeepers and Nannies are two crucial roles in a functioning household. So what is the difference between a housekeeper and a nanny? Should you hire a housekeeper or a nanny? Understanding the difference might be the deciding factor between one or the other. It’s really important that you know the difference, as this will ensure that you and your family have the best member of staff working for you. Happy children and a happy household are key to a long-term hire!

What Does a Housekeeper Do?

How can we define a housekeeper? A housekeeper performs many different cleaning tasks which include dusting, mopping, sweeping and polishing. A housekeeper is often good at paying close attention to detail and will go the extra mile for other tasks such as cooking, running errands or even dog walking! A housekeeper’s main responsibility is to effectively maintain a clean and well-looked-after home whilst ensuring that the owners of the property are satisfied with their standard of cleaning and duties. A good housekeeper will be flexible, and provide a friendly and discreet service, with excellent time management.

What Does a Nanny Do?

On the other hand, a nanny typically cares for the children whilst the parents are busy. This allows the parents to know that the child(ren) is in the trusted care of someone who will ensure that their child is safe, well-nourished and always happy! Nannies will often be given tasks to complete with the children such as doing the school run, homework, preparing meals, and bathing/dressing the children. The nanny may well assist with cleaning the children’s rooms, cooking for the children and arranging the children’s laundry. They may also be willing to empty the dishwasher and help out around the house, but they will be unlikely to deep clean the toilet! Therefore it is important to understand this distinction when it comes to hiring the right person for your home.

What Are Other Options?

The final option is, of course, hiring a nanny/housekeeper! This is a candidate who can do everything, from looking after the children through to the cleaning and house management of the home itself. Depending on the ages of your children, if they are particularly young, this may mean that the nanny/housekeeper has limited time to spend on the house, however if the children are more independent due to their age, then they will have more time to spend on the household duties. It is important to consider that there are only so many days in the week, and a good nanny/housekeeper needs time off to relax and recover from their long, sometimes intensive, working days.

Has this helped you decide which type of candidate would be better suited to your family? When it comes to hiring the right individual, it takes a lot of consideration. Polo and Tweed specialise in recruiting and placing luxury domestic service staff in the UK and around the world. We work with professional candidates in our 60,000+ database. We are happy to discuss your staffing requirements and give any advice or guidance. If you’d like to chat with us, please do get in touch with us here or give us a call on +44(0)203 858 0233

Top 10 Interview Tips to Keep Calm

Published on March 7, 2023

Interviews can be nerve-wracking experiences for many individuals, especially those who are not used to being in high-pressure situations. However, there are many ways to keep calm during an interview and increase your chances of success. Here are the top 10 interview tips to keep calm:

Research the company and the position

Before your interview, research the company and the position you’re applying for. This includes visiting the company’s website and social media pages, reading news articles about the company, and learning about their mission, values, and culture. Understanding the company’s background and values can help you tailor your answers to the interview questions and show that you’re a good fit for the company.

Prepare answers to common questions

Prepare answers to common interview questions, such as “Tell me about yourself,” “What are your strengths and weaknesses,” and “Why do you want to work for this company?” Make sure your answers are honest, concise, and demonstrate why you’re a good fit for the job.

Practice with mock interviews

Practice makes perfect, and mock interviews can help you feel more comfortable and confident during the real interview. Ask a friend or family member to conduct a mock interview with you, or practice answering questions in front of a mirror. This can help you identify any areas you need to improve and become more comfortable with the interview process.

Dress appropriately

Your appearance can have a significant impact on how you feel during the interview. Dressing appropriately can help you feel more professional and confident. Research the company’s dress code and choose clothing that is appropriate for the job and the company’s culture.

Arrive early

Arriving early can help you feel more relaxed and give you time to collect your thoughts before the interview. Plan to arrive at least 10-15 minutes early, and use the extra time to review your notes or take deep breaths.

Take deep breaths

Deep breathing can help calm your nerves and reduce anxiety. Practice deep breathing exercises before the interview, and take a few deep breaths before entering the interview room. This can help you feel more relaxed and focused.

Use positive self-talk

Positive self-talk can help you feel more confident and calm. Repeat positive affirmations to yourself, such as “I am prepared for this interview,” “I am a good fit for this job,” or “I am confident and capable.” This can help shift your mindset from one of fear or anxiety to one of confidence and self-assuredness.

Visualise success

Visualizing success can help you feel more confident and calm during the interview. Take a few minutes before the interview to visualize yourself acing the interview and getting the job. Imagine yourself answering questions confidently, making a good impression on the interviewer, and receiving a job offer. This can help you feel more confident and positive about the interview.

Be honest and authentic

Being honest and authentic during the interview can help you feel more comfortable and confident. Don’t try to be someone you’re not, or say what you think the interviewer wants to hear. Published on March 6, 2023

As a business owner or manager, you know that hiring new staff members can be both exciting and daunting. On the one hand, it’s always great to expand your team and bring in fresh talent. You want to ensure that your new hires are fully equipped to do their job to the best of their abilities. One way to achieve this is by investing in training for your new staff. Training is an essential component of any successful business. Not only does it help your employees develop new skills and improve their performance, but it also increases job satisfaction and can lead to higher levels of employee retention. So, what are some of the benefits of investing in training for your new staff?

Improved Productivity

When your new hires are properly trained, they’ll be able to complete their tasks more efficiently and with greater accuracy. This means that they’ll be able to get more done in less time, which can lead to increased productivity and a boost in overall business performance.

Better Customer Satisfaction

A well trained employee is better equipped to handle customer inquiries and complaints. This can lead to higher levels of customer satisfaction, which is essential for any business that wants to succeed in today’s competitive marketplace.

Increased Employee Engagement

When you invest in training for your new staff, you’re showing them that you’re committed to their success and growth within the company. This can lead to higher levels of employee engagement, which can have a positive impact on overall job satisfaction and employee retention.

Increased Employee Retention

Speaking of employee retention, investing in training can help reduce employee turnover. When employees feel valued and supported, they’re more likely to stay with the company long-term, which can save you time and money in the long run.

Competitive Advantage

Finally, investing in training for your new staff can give you a competitive advantage over other businesses in your industry. When you have a team of skilled and knowledgeable employees, you’ll be better equipped to handle challenges and capitalize on opportunities as they arise.

What To Do Next?

So, how can you ensure that your new staff members are properly trained? Here are a few tips:

  1. Develop a training plan: Before your new employees start their job, create a training plan that outlines the skills and knowledge they’ll need to succeed. This can include on-the-job training, classroom training, or online courses.
  1. Assign a mentor: Consider assigning a mentor to your new employees. This person can help answer questions, provide guidance, and offer support as needed.
  1. Provide ongoing training: Training shouldn’t stop after the initial onboarding process. To ensure that your employees continue to develop and grow, provide ongoing training opportunities throughout their tenure with the company.
