Do you know where you can hire a gardener? If you are looking for a new gardener, it can sometimes be difficult to know where the start. Do you hire someone directly, and where do you find good gardeners? What would be the best route to take, to hire a gardener? Keep reading for all the answers!

Why Hire A Gardener

Firstly, let’s have a look at why you might want to consider to hire a gardener. Some people may think that to hire a gardener, you need to have a large estate or piece of land. That is not true! Anyone with any outside space, and budget, could consider hiring a gardener at some stage.

There can be many reasons for it. Of course, if you indeed have a large piece of land then having a gardener might just be a practical necessity.

But even if you have a small garden or outside space, there can still be a need for someone to manage that. Because however small your outside space, it will still need maintenance. And perhaps you have no time to do this at all, or perhaps you do not want to, or lack the skills and knowledge.

A final option could be that you are unable to do the often physical work that is required in a garden.

All of which are good reasons to consider a gardener!

Gardeners For Different Budgets

And budget can play a large part too. A gardener is one of the professions that tend to have extremely varied working schedules. Of course, there are plenty of full-time gardeners out there, who work for one household or estate.

But what is even more common, is gardeners working part-time or freelance for different families. Depending on the size of your outside space and setup, will depend on how often you will need a gardener to work for you. And this might only be once a week, or once a fortnight for example! So that will also influence the cost. Perhaps you do not have the budget for a full-time gardener, but you can afford someone to come and help out every now and then. Which could be a great solution!

Where To Hire A Gardener

So now that you have decided you would indeed need, or want to hire a gardener, where to start? There are, simply speaking, two options you can go for. You can either self-hire or use a professional agency to help you do the recruitment process for you.

Self-Hiring

Self hiring means what it says: you would fully be in control of the whole process of finding and hiring your new gardener. This might save you money initially, as agencies would charge a fee. But it can cost you more in the long run.

Not everyone is suited to self-hire. Actually, self-hiring is underestimated a lot. It can be a very lengthy, and time-consuming process to fit in with your already busy life. And especially if you have never recruited, or advertised for staff before, it can be a bit of a daunting process.

If you do decide to self-hire, make sure you are taking the process seriously and give it the time and effort it needs. You really do not want to rush the process. You might find a gardener quickly, but they might not be the right fit. Because you did not do a proper interview, or trial, or forgot to check their references.

Also, be careful with recommendations. It can be great to get a recommendation for a gardener from a family member or friend. But do keep in mind that what works really well for them, might not at all work for you! So even though someone comes recommended, make sure you still follow a complete recruitment process of checking their CV, interviewing and checking references.

Using An Agency

A second option to hire a gardener is to use a professional recruitment agency. This is an excellent option if you want to make sure the process is done efficiently and thoroughly. Often, agencies already have a large selection of candidates on their books. And a good agency would make sure they are all registered properly, with checked references and fully vetted. This makes the process instantly a lot quicker for you.

Because it means that, once the agency knows and understands what you are looking for, they simply can present the suitable options for you. Agencies will also have a very wide network of gardeners they can reach out to, so they will be able to find people that you might never have been able to reach. It can give you peace of mind knowing that someone else is doing all the hard work, and you simply have to pick the person you feel matches the best!
