It would certainly make life easier for you but making the decision to hire an extra pair of hands requires weighing up the pros and cons of having a maid in your home.

To help with your decision we’ve compiled a comprehensive list of the pros and cons you should consider before hiring a maid.

What are the Pros of Hiring a Maid?

  1. Enjoy a consistently clean home

Keeping your home clean is a challenge when you have a demanding work and family schedule. If you’re a busy working parent with very little time on your hands, cleaning your house can quickly get pushed down to the bottom of your to-do list.

Hiring a maid means you’re paying for a consistent cleaning schedule no matter how busy you are! Having a maid gives you the assurance that your household is regularly cleaned while you get on with other, more pressing matters.

  1. Live in a spectacularly fragrant home

A professional, experienced maid should do a much better job of cleaning than you. Your maid will know the best way to banish stubborn stains and give your home a lingering fragrant aroma. The same goes for washing and ironing. A pro maid reduces a mountain of laundry far quicker than you.

  1. No more back-breaking chores

Cleaning is physically demanding and you need a strong stomach for the more grimy jobs. Sweeping, vacuuming and mopping is strenuous. You might find jobs such as cleaning difficult but maids do this every day. Maids though are happy and more than capable of taking on all household chores. Hiring a maid will save you from such back-breaking work as well as jobs you just don’t want to do yourself.

  1. More free time

Time is money. Investing in hiring a maid actually buys you time when you have a busy schedule with children to look after or a business to run. By paying a maid to relieve you of household duties, you get to spend more time taking care of matters more important to you.

What are the Cons of Hiring a Maid?

  1. You must trust your maid

You must be able to trust whoever you hire as a maid, who will be responsible for looking after your household and your belongings. If you don’t trust your maid, you’ll be constantly on edge and won’t be comfortable leaving the maid alone in your house. So it’s important that you can allow your maid to get on with their work and reap the benefits.

To ensure you can trust your maid it’s best to hire someone through an agency that can fully vet the candidate with background checks and getting references before introducing them to you.

  1. Your maid might not do things “your way”

You may be very specific about the way you like things done around your house, especially if you’ve been doing the housekeeping until now. Your maid may do things differently, which could cause you stress. On the other hand, your maid’s way of doing it could well be more efficient. After all, the maid is the expert!

Communication is key! Talk to you maid about how you like things to be done, what goes where, and how often tasks should be done. This will ensure they do a good job of looking after your home. You can also create a checklist for them to follow if this helps.

  1. Extra Costs

The cost of hiring a maid is the biggest area of concern. As with any other service which you would outsource to another person, you must pay them for their time and services. However, you have to weigh up the financial cost against time and energy saved. For an overview of the costs involved in hiring a maid or housekeeper click here.

I think a lot of people don’t keep a clean home and need a maid service!

I like that you pointed out how you get to spend more time taking care of important matters when you hire a house keeping maid. My wife and I has been quite busy with our work since it is almost the end of the month. We do not have any time to take care of our house so we should probably just hire a professional to help us out.
