Are you looking to hire a temporary gardener, but are not sure where to start? You can try to self-hire, use recommendations in your network, or use an agency to help you. So find out what option works best for you so you can hire the right temporary gardener for you!

Why A Temporary Gardener

It is more common than you might think to hire a gardener for a temporary contract. And some people do not even realise this is an option too! There are many reasons why you might want to hire a temporary gardener. You might temporarily be unable to do any gardening work yourself. Or you might have a project outdoors you need professional help with. Whatever the reasons, a temporary gardener can make a big difference to your outside space!

Self-Hire

There are two ways you can hire a temporary gardener. You can either self-hire, meaning you are fully organising the process from start to finish. Or you can have a professional agency do the work for you.

If you are choosing to self-hire, it is important to know and understand the amount of work that goes into self-hiring.

Have you ever hiring a member of staff before? Whether this was a temporary gardener, or someone else? If you are completely new to the process you want to make sure you first have the time to hire a gardener. Even though you might just need your gardener for a temporary role, you want to make sure to follow the process fully. And do not miss out on any steps!

What Not To Forget

It can be time-consuming – because you want to make sure you do your due diligence throughout the whole hiring process. You should never hire someone you have not spoken to. Do not offer someone a job just from reading a CV or a covering letter.

You want to make sure you have at least several people to interview before you make your choice. And this can take time if you cannot instantly find people who want to apply for your job. Once you have selected people to interview, make sure you can either do a face to face meeting – or at least a video call.

Once you have found a person you think might be suited, make sure to check references to check their CV and previous work experience. Even if everything looks really good, checking references is vital to make sure the person is indeed who they say they are. Unfortunately, you cannot, and should not want to, take any risks with this.

Where possible, see if you can book a face to face meeting or a trial. If the gardening booking is only for one day, this might not be needed as the trial might be longer than the actual booking! But for a longer hire, a short trial or at least a face to face interview will be highly valuable.

Where To Find Candidates

One of the biggest challenges of self-hiring any type of staff can be to actually find people who might be interested in and suited for the job. You might struggle to find any people at all or are not sure where to start. Online is the best way to go nowadays. Social media platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter will be good options for you to try and get the word out there.

You can also try and use your local network. Perhaps someone you know has a good recommendation to hire a temporary gardener? With recommendations, make sure you still follow the recruitment process. Even though one person might be really suited for one family. That does not automatically mean they will be suited for you. So still make sure to interview, and check references too.

Use An Agency

If you do not have the time or do not want the stress of trying to hire a temporary gardener yourself? You should use a professional agency. The great thing about using an agency is that they will take all the hard work and stress away from you. They will likely have many vetted candidates already on their books. As well as having a wide network of potential candidates they can reach out to in a quick and efficient manner.

Using an agency means that you purely have to focus on the candidate you like. The agency will do all the leg work. The candidates should all be vetted and registered, and suited for the job. Especially when you are looking to hire a temporary gardener, using an agency can be much more effective. As the time it would take you to self-hire, could be much longer than the gardener would actually end up working for you!
