Do you know how to progress your domestic staff career? Whether you are working as a housekeeper, nanny, gardener, butler, or any other type of domestic staff. It is important to have a goal in your career to be working towards. And that can mean many different things. But knowing how to get there, can be as important as the goal itself.
What Do You Find Important?
If you are looking at how to progress your domestic staff career, first take a moment to establish for yourself what that means. How do you want to progress your job? And what goals would that have?
Money
For some people progressing means making more money. Which can be a very good, clear goal to have. Financially, your life might look very different if you would be making more money, for example.
Work/Life Balance
But progression does not only have to mean more money. Perhaps you are looking for a better work/life balance. Maybe you are working so many hours at the moment, that you hardly have time to relax. Or see your family, and spend time with friends. So progressing in your career can also mean
A Different Job Role
And perhaps, progressing in your career means getting a new, or higher up job function. Perhaps you are a housekeeper now, looking to become a head housekeeper. Or you are a house manager, looking to become an estate manager. Maybe you are a junior nanny. looking to become a supernanny. There are many ways to you progress and get a new, or higher position. Find out what makes you excited. Do you like managing people? Delegating, organising? Then yes, a ‘head of’ or management position might be for you. But perhaps you just really enjoy the actual job tasks. Remember, as a head housekeeper you will probably do less of the actual housekeeping tasks. And more management, sitting behind a computer. Managing schedules, rotas and payrolls, for example.
So don’t get too caught up with getting ‘higher up’ if that is not actually a role you enjoy. There might be other ways for you to progress. Perhaps by working in a different household that suits you better. Or maybe somewhere where you are the only member of staff. or the exact opposite – where you are working in a large team!
The point is, find out what you love, and what you find important. Job satisfaction is really important to be able to be happy. You will spend many days of your life working, so take some time to make sure you are happy with what you do – or at least the outcome!
Try To Not ‘Job-Hop’
So one way to really progress your domestic staff career is to have a solid amount of experience on your CV. If you want to do or achieve any of the above mentioned, a good cv and job history is important.
Of course, there will be many factors you cannot control sometimes. But it really looks much better on your CV if you were able to retain a job for a longer period of time – at least a year or 2. This does not mean you should stay stuck in a job that is really unsuited for you. Of course, as already said, sometimes circumstances happen. But try and find a job that you know could work for you for at least a couple of years. If you have too many doubts beforehand, it probably won’t work. Is the commute really long? The salary not what you are looking for? The tasks not really what you enjoy or want to be doing? Be critical of the jobs you are looking for. So that you can find something suited for you. Which will get you one step closer to progressing further in your domestic staff career.
Invest In Training
Another really important way of how you can progress your domestic staff career is by investing in training. Training is a great thing to add to your CV, for starters. When you have training courses and qualifications on your CV, it shows that you are dedicated and willing to invest time and money into learning and educating yourself.
Another great thing about training is that it will expand your skillset. This can make you really attractive as an employee for promotions for example, or salary increases. It can also really open up your career path for new opportunities. With your newfound skills and knowledge, you might finally qualify to apply for that job you actually always wanted.
