How To Be Successful in The Domestic Staff Industry

stars

Published on March 10, 2021

Do you know how to be successful in the domestic staff industry? Perhaps you are a butler, a housekeeper, gardener, nanny or any person working in the domestic industry. It can be very different from corporate work, for example. And being successful can sometimes feel and look a bit different. So let us show you how you can be, and feel successful being part of the domestic staff industry!

What Is Success?

To understand how you can be successful, we first need to establish what success means for you. And although for some that seems very obvious – it really is different for every single person. Success is not just making money, or being rich. It can absolutely mean that for you, though! But it not always is the solution to feeling satisfied and happy in your job, for example. So let’s have a look first at different types of success. Some may resonate with you.

Money/Finances

We mentioned this above already. Success for some people can absolutely mean having, or making, a certain amount of money. Maybe you have a goal salary in mind you one day want to achieve. Or to be able to have the disposable income to save, or buy things you want to buy. When you define money as one of your goals, or your main goal to success though, it is important to be concrete. If  ‘becoming rich’ is your goal, that will be too vague. So you will never feel like you have reached that goal like you have become successful. ‘Rich’ can mean very different things for different people. What is a lot of money for one person, is not at all enough for another.

So if you are looking at money as a goal to be successful, set a concrete goal. You want more money because, why? What would you be able to do if you have that money you now do not have? Perhaps you could buy a house. Or take your family on regular holidays. Or buy a car you have always wanted. Or provide education for your children. Whatever your financial success means, make sure it is a concrete goal. So you can work towards that.

Work/Life Balance

Another way to look at success might be you have a good work/life balance. Meaning that you do not spend all day, every day at work. But that the job you do, and the money you earn, allows you to spend downtime. Perhaps with friends or your family. So that can be a great feeling of success. That your job, and the money you make with that, allows you to spend time not being at work. Maybe your goal is to be able to work part-time, but have enough money you need to pay your bills. This could be a concrete lifestyle to work towards, and you feeling successful in the domestic staff industry!

Enjoying Your Job

A final thing that could be seen as being successful in the domestic staff industry, could simply be you really love your job. If you love your job, it might not feel like a struggle every day to get up and go to work. If you have fun, and you get pleasure out of the work you do, it can make you really happy. And that can be feeling successful for some people! Feeling happy and content in your job is really important for your mental and physical health. So if you are not finding that enjoyment in your job right now, you might have to consider how you can change that. It might simply mean the job is not right for you. If, indeed, enjoying your job is one of the important things for you to feel successful.

How To Achieve Success

Considering there are many different ways people see success, there are different ways you can achieve feeling successful in the domestic staff industry. Is does come down to you critically having a look at what you want to get out of your job, and what needs to change.

Invest In Training

There are many different outcomes that training can have. Training can be a great way for you to become more confident in the job you have. Because perhaps you weren’t sure how to do certain tasks. But training has given you the confidence to do them and to do them well. And in return, it is giving you job satisfaction. And you might actually enjoy your job from now on!

Another way training can be effective is for you to find a new job, or get higher up in your job. If you have been working as a housekeeper, for example, you might be able to become head housekeeper or even house manager with the right training. And sometimes training offers you the insight of fully changing careers or add extra skills. This might make you a more desirable candidate during job interviews and you might have more of a chance to secure the job you have always wanted.

Set Your Expectations To Your Employer

You will never be able to achieve what you want unless you are clear about it – to yourself and also the person you work for. If you want to work part-time hours, then discuss with your employer what that may look like. if you want to work a higher salary and feel like you deserve this, then you can request this conversation. Just make sure that your arguments are valid. If you just started a new job, it is not suited to have a conversation about a salary increase, or decrease of hours, for example. You need to be able to add value and have proven to be a valuable employee. But you might be surprised how many doors can open if you are having a fair and open conversation about what you might want to achieve in the future.
