Hiring a Live-in Housekeeper from Overseas

Looking for a live-in housekeeper? Hiring one from overseas has many benefits. Here's how our recruitment agency can help you Click To TweetWhen hiring a live-in Housekeeper there are many different things to consider. But have you considered hiring a live-in Housekeeper from overseas? This can have many benefits for you! It brings a different culture into your household, and hiring a multi-lingual Housekeeper can be a great choice if you or your children are learning a new language.

But what should you consider when hiring a live in housekeeper from overseas?

What should you consider when hiring a live-in housekeeper from overseas?

Job Adverts. You are looking for a Housekeeper from overseas so it is really important that you advertise your role where the appropriate candidates will see it. Working with an agency that has contacts all over the world will ensure that you target those people. More information on the benefits of using an agency can be found here.

Referrals. Do you know someone that has already hired a Housekeeper from overseas? Maybe they can point you in the right direction. Or maybe their Housekeeper can put you in contact with some other great Housekeepers that they already know!

Interviews. You should have a one-to-one conversation with each candidate you are considering. You can use Skype or Face time to conduct your interviews.

Language barriers. You may be hiring a Housekeeper from overseas because you want to learn a new language. However, they should have a sufficient level of English to be able to converse with you and your family. This is important as you want to be sure they understand what you are asking of them in their job role.

Vetting your candidates. We highly recommend that you vet all your candidates, whether they are local or from overseas. Polo & Tweed checks the references of all the candidates we recommend to give you peace of mind. You should always get references from previous employers so you can know how the candidate works and help you decide whether he or she is right for your family.

What are the benefits of having assistance from a foreign live-in housekeeper?

  • Hiring a Housekeeper from overseas can be a great way to familiarise your household and your family with another culture. Because your new housekeeper will be living with you, you will likely learn a lot about their culture. If cooking is part of your live-in housekeeper’s job description you may enjoy having foreign cuisine and learning new ways of cooking.
  • If you or your children are trying to learn a new language, the best way is to practice, practice, practice. Hiring a live-in Housekeeper whose native language is the one you are trying to learn is an effective way to do this.

      Hello Doreen,

Thank you for your question. All the staff we can find for you would be paid a salary as per the country’s employment laws. Salaries will differ per country, and also depending on the background and experience of the housekeeper you would be looking for, but it is always at least the minimum wage. You can read more about hiring a housekeeper on our website here.

These are UK salaries though, and they can differ in other countries. You can always get in touch with us here if you like to chat more about this and we can help you further!

What if I have already found the person I’d like to hire? Can you help me with the visa paperwork etc? That seems to be what I’m finding so confusing

    • Aafke Meelen says:

Thank you for reaching out, Bruce! We, unfortunately, cannot assist with VISAs, sponsorships or the right to work in a country. We highly recommend reaching out to IAS as they can provide you with professional support and help you obtain a VISA. Be careful and do not pay for a service until you are 100% certain of the quality of the provider. Hoping this helps!
