Need a hand with housework and the kids? Here's how to hire a live-in nanny housekeeper. Click To TweetA live in nanny housekeeper is an ideal solution for families looking for a high level of support and care for their children and their home.  When you hire a live in nanny housekeeper, it serves a dual purpose of looking after children and keeping the house in tip top condition.  This type of home help is favoured by families with young children and a stay-at-home mum highly involved in her children’s daily lives, or with older children attending school.

This combination of skills and duties, allows for a more fluid and adjustive family life, as the nanny housekeeper will move between tasks which are important for the family to have support in – be it in childcare or in housekeeping.

So why is it important to hire a live in nanny housekeeper and what are their typical duties?

What is the importance of having a live-in nanny housekeeper?

A live in nanny housekeeper can support your family’s specific needs.  While those needs vary from family to family, a nanny housekeeper is most suited to a family that needs full- or part-time help with a variety of duties. If you’re looking to hire to someone to look after the children and the house, a live in nanny housekeeper is what you need.

It’s important to remember that the multi-tasking duties of a nanny housekeeper means they should be good in both childcare and housekeeping. However, when you are hiring a nanny housekeeper, you’ll mostly attract candidates that are either a nanny or a housekeeper. You’ll rarely find a candidate working in this dual role. This is fine though. Just ensure that candidates’ CVs should show that they have experience in both areas.

It’s equally important to keep in mind that a live-in nanny housekeeper needs their own space and privacy. Some families provide separate accommodation. Others provide accommodation in the family home – whichever works best for the family. Either way, the live in candidate should always have their own space which is theirs and completely private.

What are the duties of a live-in nanny housekeeper?

Duties vary with each household and family. It’s not always a 50/50 split between the two roles. Those duties may include:

  • Childcare duties: drop off/pick up, babysitting, taking the children out for activities
  • Housekeeping duties: cleaning the home, laundry, ironing, deep cleaning
  • Cooking duties: shopping, menu planning and cooking family meals
  • Pet duties: walking dogs, feeding and caring for pets

How do these duties make your life more comfortable?

An extra pair of hands means you can focus on what you love to do. This may be looking after your children, walking your dog, or simply putting your feet up to relax after a long day at work! Family life is always busy. Even if the children are at school, you might not have the time (or desire) to clean your house. Work commitments can interfere with collecting the children from school and ensuring they are safe and happy. Having a live in nanny housekeeper simply means you have more time to focus on what you enjoy, and give you peace of mind that your children, pets and home are always well cared for.

A tidy and organised home, with happy children make for a happy life! So a great nanny housekeeper will ensure that your home is beautiful, and your children are always cared for.  A wonderful solution for a busy family!

What is the typical salary of a live-in nanny housekeeper?

As you are providing a package of accommodation and possibly other perks such as a car and food, salaries should be adjusted to take this into account. However, that doesn’t mean reducing the salary by as much as those costs. For example, if accommodation, transport and food adds up to £10,000 a year, you can’t just take off £10,000 from the salary. There are UK government guidelines for what the proportion should be, which is revised every year.

Salaries range from:

Entry Level/Less Experienced Housekeeper with 2-4 years experience

  • Entry Level/Less Experienced Live-in Housekeepers: £350 – £450 net per week
  • £21K – £30K gross per year
