At Polo & Tweed, we are nothing without our amazing candidates. That’s why we thought it was high time to shine a much-deserved spotlight on some of our amazing candidates each month. We hope it gives you some insight into the domestic industry, and it might inspire you as much as our candidates inspire us, every day.

Candidate of the month November: Alison

Alison is truly a star candidate. An amazingly skilled and highly experienced housekeeper and cook, Alison brings a wealth of experience alongside her sparkling personality.

What was your first ever job in the domestic industry?

I started out with two jobs at more or less the same time. Then I worked for a Hertfordshire family as their Cook for the shooting season and for various other events. I also worked for a lovely family of four in St Alban’s as their Housekeeper / Cook. The latter role involved cooking, cleaning, gardening, shopping, and child care. I loved this position – it was a great introduction to the industry and my employers were very sad to see me leave to take up a full-time position.

What do you love about your job?

It keeps me really fit and gives me a great sense of purpose. Cleaning appeals to some very fundamental aspects of my nature – there is nothing more satisfying than seeing a sparkling home after I’ve given it a good clean. I love using great cleaning products that leave the home smelling gorgeous.

Any advice for people looking to enter the industry?

It’s a massive privilege and honour to go into someone’s home in such a private capacity. Always be respectful and mindful. Knuckle down and get the job done thoroughly each and every day.

You have to be able to take constructive criticism if you are going to grow in this role. It takes time before you can ‘read’ your client and understand exactly where your focus needs to be. Be patient and always be kind to yourself.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

I hope to be settled into a happy routine with a lovely family where I am able to use the wide range of skills I have acquired over the years as a cleaner, florist and caterer.

What is your advice for any candidate working with an agency like Polo & Tweed?

Trust that this group of consummate professionals and leaders in the industry will find you a position where you can flourish. This may take a while – which is fine!

Any top tips for your job?

Enjoy every day and do the best you can. You can’t do more than that. Remember that your work as a housekeeper is never done and your employers are most likely to notice what isn’t done long before they remember all the things you have managed to tick off that list. Keep smiling!
