A day in the life of a Chef

Published on December 15, 2022

Have you ever wondered what a typical life as a private Chef includes? Read on to learn about what Jordan’s typical day is like, working in for a busy family of five in Kensington, London.

11am
I arrive at the property at 11am. The household is quiet as the family are busy at school and at work. This gives me a chance to get the kitchen ready for another busy day of cooking. I check the families schedule to see who I will be cooking for tonight.

11:30am
Once I have prepped everything i need for the day and checked who I will be cooking for today, I start to prepare anything for dinner which can be prepared in advance. This will make my evening run a lot smoother. As today is a week day and the family are out, I dont need to cook lunch. On weekdays I generally have more time to focus on batch cooking, baking desserts and sourcing ingredients.

1pm
The family like fresh ingredients and prefer to eat healthy, so after I have organised and prepped anything that I can for the day, I go to the local market to buy fresh ingredients for dinner. Today I am picking up fresh fish and vegetables. I also pick up any stock that I am running low on – today I need to get more flour as I am going to bake a cake for dessert.

2:30pm
I am now back from sourcing ingredients and the children will be home from school soon. Mum likes me to prepare a healthy snack for them for when they arrive home so I make a start on cooking healthy granola bars which will be ready for them when they arrive home in the next hour. I also keep the fruit bowl topped up so that they can help themselves.

3:30pm
The children have jus arrived back from school with their nanny, who comes into the kitchen to collect their afterschool snacks while they get changed out of their school clothes. While they are having their snacks I clear up the kitchen ready for dinner prep.

4pm
Now I start getting dinner ready. Today the family are having fresh fish from the market and I am making a fish pie with filo pastry which is a firm favourite of the lady of the house. The family like to have extra meals in the freezer to have on the weekends when I am not in work and my fish pie freezes beautifully. So I make an extra pie for freezing.

6:30pm
The family sit down to eat dinner, whilst I clean the kitchen and start the planning for tomorrow.

8pm
My work day is now over, I do final checks as I am usually the last staff member to leave.
