Do you know how to become a housekeeper? Being a housekeeper can be a great career to be in. As long as you are organised, enjoy manual work and make a house look its absolute best. If you are interested in becoming a housekeeper, keep reading to find out everything you need to know. So that you can find your new dream job!
What Does A Housekeeper Do?
If you want to become a housekeeper, it is important to know exactly what the job entails. As a housekeeper, you are not a cleaner. That’s a very important first thing to keep in mind. Cleaning is, however, very much part of the job, and you need to be happy and able to do this. To find out what a housekeeper really means, the clue is in the word. You will be keeping (up) the house. This means that your skills can vary enormously, from cleaning and polishing to running errands and flower arranging. There are many housekeepers who also partly look after children or pets, and help with shopping or cooking.
When You’re Looking For A Housekeeper
If you are looking for a housekeeper, make sure to be realistic in your demands though. Having someone clean and organise the house to a very high standard can take a lot of time already. Do they realistically also have the time to prepare breakfast, and do the school run? If you are asking for too many varied tasks from someone, they might not be able to complete any of the tasks properly.
When You’re Looking For A Job
Equally, if you are looking to become a housekeeper, or are finding a new housekeeping job, focus on what you are really good at. You do not want to promise too many skills or tasks you can do, for exactly the same reasons as above. Find your niche and your specialism. This will get you much further in your housekeeping career. Most importantly, you will enjoy your job much more if you do the tasks you are confident with and good at!
Where To Learn The Skills
So how do you become a housekeeper? Clients will be looking for practical skills and knowledge, as well as a passion for the job. It is impossible to get loads of experience out of nowhere, so you have to start at the beginning: get solid training and qualification. If you are completely new to the housekeeping industry, start with a good housekeeping training course. Have a look at a reputable training provider that can give you a comprehensive training course. Make sure that it is a training course for housekeeping, not cleaning. The two are very different, and cleaning training only will not give you all the knowledge and skills you need.
Your First Practise and Experience
From then: practise, practise, practise! You can practise in your own home where you can apply all your newfound housekeeping skills. See if you can get some freelance, part-time housekeeping jobs for people in your area, even if it is for a couple of hours of cleaning a week. Hotels could be another good option to start in a junior role. However, if you want to build a career in private households, make sure to keep that in mind and stay focused on that. So even if you find a junior housekeeping role in a hotel, consider keeping a part-time cleaning job in private households, to build your experience. Just make sure you don’t overwork and keep your hours realistic!
How To Find The Job
Finally, when you are ready to find your new housekeeping job, there are several routes you can take. By far the most effective way for you to find a great job is to use a reputable recruitment agency. They will make sure to understand what it is you are looking for and try their best to match you with the most suited role for you. Often they can also help with your application, and give you tips on how to interview, and deal with job offers.
You can find jobs online yourself, or via your own network too. Just make sure you do your due diligence and understand fully what the job is. Do you have a clear understanding of the tasks, hours and salary? Before you go into the interview make sure you have all those details clear so that won’t be any surprises later on down the line.
