Do you know how to carry yourself in an interview? Maybe you are currently applying for roles and are unsure what to expect. Correct interview etiquette always applies, regardless of whether the interview is in a formal setting or an informal chat. But don’t worry, we’re here to help: this is everything you should know about job interview etiquette.

What is Job Interview Etiquette?

Job Interview etiquette is all the things you do and show, during your interview. You can think of things such as how you behave, your body language, and the grammar you use. But even up to the conversational tone you use and the ways you are showing respect to the person interviewing you. Simple things such as being polite, saying please and thank you, and being on time (early!) are all part of that. Doing your research for the role you are applying for is extremely important too. Being well prepared, as well as reading up on the employer’s and company background will show the interviewer that you are well prepared and eager to work for them.

Here are some tips to help you prepare:

Be Honest!

Remember, honesty is the best policy. You don’t want to be caught out during your interview that you have lied on your application or have not shared crucial information. It is vital that you come across as a trustworthy candidate to help give you credibility. For instance, if you were worried about sharing information that may affect your ability to work, it is important you let the employer know ASAP to avoid wasting each other’s time. An employer will always want someone they can trust and rely upon.

Do Your Research

Why are you applying for this role? You want to make a positive impression on the employer so always give yourself time to do your research prior to the interview. They may ask you to explain your understanding of the position or what you know about the company.

A few good examples of what to research include:

  • The job specification
  • Skills & expertise requirements
  • The employer’s background & history
  • Where is the role based? How will you get there?

Dress Smart

Whatever the role you are applying for, first impressions count. Even if you are having an informal interview it is always best to dress smart and not take any chances. It shows you have taken the time to prepare, and look professional. Make sure your clothes are clean, ironed and fit you well. You could wear a formal dress, a smart shirt, trousers, etc. (You shouldn’t be turning up to an interview in jeans!) Make sure you look presentable and professional.

Be careful with your words

Actively listen to the interviewer and do not rush your responses. It may help to rehearse beforehand. It’s a good idea to ask a friend or family member to help run through some practice interview questions with you so that you have a rough idea of what to expect during the real deal. It is important to use correct grammar and avoid using inappropriate language or swear words. Make sure to keep a positive attitude throughout the interview and never talk negatively about previous work and employers.

Smile!

You should be excited to start a new opportunity and the interviewer should really be able to sense your enthusiasm throughout the interview. You always want to finish the interview on a positive note. First impressions count, but last impressions certainly do, too! If anything, that way it will be a positive situation for you to look back on. And one you can continue to learn from, for a potential next interview.
