Are you thinking of becoming a house manager, but aren’t sure what sort of skills and traits are required? So, who can become a house manager?

Anybody can apply to become a house manager. However, there are certain traits or skills that the role requires in order to be successful. This is why it is pivotal for a person to research the role before applying. So they understand what would be needed from them. And they can decide if it the right step for them. On top of this, there are qualifications and experience that can help you be prepared for this role.

Typical skills and characteristics

Leadership and communication

This is a good skill to have. Because the house manager would most likely be in charge of other domestic workers on the property. They would be in charge of ensuring that the principal’s demands are being met. And possibly assist if anyone is behind schedule. This is why communication is key as the house manager would not only be speaking to staff, but they will be greeting guests or taking calls for the principal. In some cases, the house manager will be given the responsibility for hiring and interviewing new staff. So, leadership and communication skills or experience would be extremely beneficial for this role.

Finance knowledge and budgeting skills

A big part of the role is finance, as the house manager is normally trusted with the finances of the property. This means budgeting skills are essential as it would be the house manager who has to budget maintenance repairs, booking things for events and hiring new workers. They could also be placed in charge of the payroll for the other staff members. This means it is important for the house manager to be comfortable with finance, as the principal will trust them to budget the money wisely.

Organisation and eye for detail

Another important skill to have is an eye for detail, as the house manager will be responsible for ensuring that the property is kept in pristine condition. As mentioned before, it will also be their responsibility to spot any problems on the property and rectify them.

Qualifications

When it comes to qualifications, there is no requirement when applying for a house manager. Meaning, there is not one specific qualification you must have to become a house manager. It varies per household and the type of job. In fact, a principal will most likely look for previous experience working in a private household. However, a qualification would look amazing on your CV. It could make you stand out from the crowd. And can be particularly helpful if you have no or very little experience.

If you have a background in butlering or housekeeping completing a house management course would be perfect for your CV. The certificate on your CV on top of your experience would make you really stand out to an employer. Whereas, if you had no experience a course or qualification in house management is a great starting point to learn relevant skills.

Experience

Often clients will look for candidates who have experience in house management already. However, if you have experience in a private household working in a role like a butler or a housekeeper, you could have already gained many relevant skills without house manager being your job title.

You may have already experienced teamwork or being in charge of other members of staff as a butler or housekeeper. In your previous role, you also may have got experience with budgeting and managing inventories. It is good to include any relevant skills like these on your CV to show that you have some transferable skills.

Anyone can apply for a house manager role. But it is important to get relevant qualifications and experience to give you the best chance of success. Finally, it is vital to make a note of the traits and skills that are required before. And decide if this is the right job for you.

If you think you have the skills and characteristics required to become a great House Manager, and you have experience in a private household (even if it’s not specifically House Management) then you may be a great candidate for your dream House Manager role!
